Honda Motorcycle plans to launch its first EV in the coming fiscal year

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Private Limited (HMSI) is reportedly planning to launch its first electric vehicle in India in the upcoming fiscal year. The decision to foray into the EV segment will be finalized following a detailed discussion with its parent firm, Honda Motor Company.

If reports are to be believed, the company aims to begin a feasibility test of its electric scooters with its dealers by the end of the Indian festive season.

Confirming the news, Atsushi Ogata, President, Managing Director, and CEO of HMSI stated that several companies are venturing into the EV sector in India, with assistance from various government incentives and investments in green infrastructure.

He further added that market trends are steadily shifting towards the use of EVs for short-distance travels in cities but are not quite suitable for long journeys and in rural areas. Thus, there will not be drastic shifts from internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs anytime soon, said Ogata.

The upcoming electric scooter will surely amplify HMSI’s product offerings in the country. However, the automaker does not have any plans to replace popular ranges like Shine or Activa scooters with electric models.

Sources have also claimed that the firm is gearing up to tap into battery management systems in India, driven by government policies and support towards development & adoption of clean technologies in the automotive sector.

India is increasingly becoming a lucrative growth avenue for the automobile industry with several companies vying to launch their products & offerings in the country. Two-wheeler giant Hero MotoCorp is reportedly gearing up to launch an electric model in the upcoming year and has collaborated with Taiwanese automaker Gogoro Inc. to introduce the latter’s battery swapping platform to India.

Meanwhile, TVS Motor Company is also anticipated to unveil its complete range of electric two and three-wheelers in the nation within the next two years.
