GM expands Onstar Guardian service reach beyond its vehicle owner base
  • Onstar Guardian app can be downloaded on both and Android and Apple smartphones.
  • Subscription to the app will be offered at USD 15 per month.

American automotive giant General Motors (GM) has expanded the subscription base of its Onstar Guardian app beyond its vehicle owners in the U.S. and Canada. According to reliable sources, this will not only allow the company to generate additional revenues but also expand services to non-GM vehicle owners.

For those unaware, the Onstar Guardian app comprises roadside assistance as well as crash response dispatch services. Subscription to the app will be offered at USD 15 per month on both and Android and Apple smartphones.

General Motors CEO, Mary Barra has long pushed to expand Onstar’s reach as well as its monthly subscription to magnify the sources of income for the automaker apart from its manufacturing trucks and cars.

Santiago Chamorro, Vice President for Connected Services at GM mentioned that the Onstar Guardian App will help the company to tap into the safety & security services market which is currently worth USD 30 billion. The Guardian location and emergency notification services would also be extended to the people who seek emergency response services based on their respective location and not the car, he added.

If reports are to be believed, Onstar recently started a campaign to publicize the importance of its services. GM’s safety platform is also working on new insurance offerings as well as data analytics services for the fleet operators.

However, GM did not reveal how much it expects to generate from the Onstar Guardian offerings beyond owners of its vehicles.  The company has also not disclosed any additional information regarding Onstar’s financial performance.
