Waymo likely to join hands with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance

Nissan and its alliance partners may be planning to jointly develop unmanned taxis with Nissan’s vehicles.

The globally popular automotive partnership, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has apparently made it to the front page for all the right reasons. If reports are to be believed, the Alliance plans to join forces with Google’s reputed spin-off Waymo on a self-driving vehicle collaboration.

As per sources familiar with the knowledge of the matter, the partnership may intend to come up with autonomous taxis and myriad other services deploying self-driving vehicles. Waymo will work in tandem with the automakers and is most likely to declare a plan for the said arrangement soon enough, the sources added.

Nissan and its alliance partners may be planning to jointly develop unmanned taxis with Nissan’s vehicles and design a system for handling tasks such as payments and reservations, claim credible reports.

Incidentally, Waymo has inked similar such agreements with Jaguar Land Rover and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, however, experts vouch for the fact that the speculated deal with the Nissan-Renault alliance may be one of its biggest so far. Last year, the Google affiliate launched a commercial self-driving taxi service in the city of Phoenix, United States. With this partnership though, Waymo is likely to gain the advantage of the Alliance’s strong presence in the electric car domain that would offer the firm an opportunity to remain at the forefront of setting up viable standards for next-generation vehicles, cite sources familiar with the matter.

No official announcement has been provided by either of the concerned parties so far. Nick Twork, a spokesperson at the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance apparently claimed that the entire declaration regarding the tie-up is based on speculation and rumors. The Alliance has nothing to announce so far concerning the said collaboration, Twork added.

No confirmation has been given by the other party in question either, as Waymo’s spokespersons denied to comment on the supposed partnership.
