Twitter introduces third-party signup, login support for Apple, Google

Popular microblogging platform Twitter has reportedly introduced third-party login support to enable users to create and log in to the social network by using their existing Google or Apple accounts, as long as the emails are the same.

This feature was first available to only beta users last month, and it is now available to everyone. There are no emails or passwords to contend with, so the signup is like a more streamlined version of the standard process.

The sign-in experience isn't universal yet. Signing in with Google is enabled on Android, iOS, and the web, while the same with Apple is only supported on iOS at the present, with web support expected to be available soon. Both login methods are not yet available on the current version of the Twitter for Mac desktop client.

Signing into an Apple account on Android does not appear to be possible yet; the ‘Continue with Apple’ button is not present and using an Apple ID & password to get into Twitter does not seem to work either, cited sources.

Further, the page asks for the existing password, so users may not be able to change their passwords after creating an account using an Apple login. Although a Twitter support page does mention users can disconnect their Google or Apple account, but through web-only, which Apple users cannot log in yet. Google users, on the other hand, can reset their passwords after disconnecting their accounts.

The simultaneous release of the new options on Android and iOS comes as Apple's App Store guidelines mandate that apps provide ‘Sign in with Apple’ if they are offering a third-party login feature.

In other news, Twitter intends to collaborate with Reuters and the Associated Press to offer quick & reliable information on the platform to control the spread of false information.
