Trump targets GM & Ohio union official, demands Ohio plant reopening

United States President Donald Trump has reportedly targeted American automaker General Motors as well as an Ohio union official over a vehicle assembly plant that was closed by the automobile manufacturer recently.

Reports cite, the U.S. President’s lashing, which came via a tweet further amplifies the amount of public pressure that is currently being put on GM to re-commence operations at the plant located in Lordstown, Ohio.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Trump had recently asked General Motors CEO, Mary Barra to sell off the facility in question while trying to shift blame on the local union’s Democratic leader by claiming that the CEO blamed the union. Meanwhile, GM clarified its stance that keeping open any facilities slated to be closed is subject to the company’s labor negotiations this year with the United Auto Workers (UAW) for a new contract. The present agreement expires in September of 2019.

In a relating tweet, Trump stated that the president of UAW local 112, David Green needs to get his act together & produce. Trump further demanded that he wants action to be taken on the Lordstown facility fast, urging the involved facilities to quit complaining and get the task done.

Meanwhile, David Green claimed that he sent two letters to Trump that requested him to prevent the closure of the facility. Green further added that the President did not respond to the first letter that was sent in July 2018.

The closing of the facility would be resulting in more than 1,300 job losses. However, according to a previous statement made by GM, 417 of those jobs would be redirected to other GM manufacturing plants.

As the matter is still developing, the outcome of the negotiations between GM & UAW have not been determined yet.
