NSW calls for project ideas for its 1st renewable zone in Central West

By Mateen Dalal

Public intervention in any form of producing unique ideas and solutions to support the government initiatives, has always been acclaimed as a commendable effort. This eventually has urged various state and central governments to lay their focus on asking its patrons and project developers to come up with new ideas and solutions to help them realize a project that is advantageous for people in all aspects.

Following this principle, the New South Wales or NSW government has also proposed a similar quote for its proponents to respond to a ‘Registration of Interest’ to push consultation on its upcoming Renewable Energy Zone and new infrastructure investment.

The government recently announced that it was raising a proposal for 3K megawatt or more of solar, wind, and storage project ideas, which would join New South Wales’ first Renewable Energy Zone. Apparently, the Central-West region of the state will serve as the state’s first pilot Renewable Energy Zone, which the government anticipates will attract as much as 3000 megawatts of new generation capacity by mid-2020s, along with an estimated USD 4.4 billion investment for the state and creating about 450 long term construction employment in the region.

The main prospect behind the development of Renewable Energy Zones is for binding together the multiple large scale renewable projects into a region with good solar and wind availability, enabling investments in new transmission network infrastructure, and energy storage projects to be shared and coordinated between multiple projects.

As per reliable reports, the government has set the deadline for idea proposal till 5th of June while allowing the interested parties to respond to the Registration of Interest by the given due date. This would ultimately enable the NSW government to use the information received via proponents to develop a plan of action for Central- West Renewable energy Zone in line with establishing a market for competitive project proposals in the region.

It has been reported that the plan allows NSW to emerge as a strong competitor for its Coalition colleagues in the federal parliament, by demonstrating that solar and wind are some of the cheapest sources of new electricity generation capacity, and in the near future would serve as a key for replacing generators in the current market. Moreover, the government also expects to work with Australian Energy Market Operator to make sure that sufficient supporting infrastructure is constructed in an utterly efficient way.
