LinkedIn planning to shut down its Stories feature by end of September
LinkedIn Corporation is reportedly planning to retire the Stories feature from its professional networking platform by the end of September 2021. Instead, the company is working on introducing a reimagined video experience, a move that was predominately based on user feedback.
According to reliable sources, LinkedIn will incorporate the creative tools of the Stories feature that will enable users to attach informal and engaging videos to their profile.
Confirming the news, Senior Director of Product at LinkedIn Liz Li was quoted saying that the Stories feature was launched in 2020 as a fun and casual way for users to share quick video updates. The reimagined video experience will be an “evolved” version of Stories which will offer more conversational and richer content, she added.
For the record, the Stories feature was launched in India in October 2020 to allow users to upload and share everyday professional moments with their communities. It also allowed members to post photos and videos up to 20 seconds long which would be visible on their profiles for 24 hours.
Sources claimed that LinkedIn’s recent change was to warn advertisers who have already bought ads that would run in between Stories. These ads will now be shared on the LinkedIn feed, however, users who sponsored or promoted Stories directly from their page will need to repost them.
LinkedIn’s announcement closely follows the shutdown of Twitter’s Fleets feature on August 3rd. The microblogging platform had first unveiled this feature in November 2020 as an ephemeral, low-pressure way for users to share their fleeting thoughts, but then retired it since not enough users were leveraging it.
If LinkedIn’s new video feature gains momentum, it would join other platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat who have built their TikTok-like feeds, experts claimed.
