IPO-bound Zomato to shift its entire fleet to electric vehicles by 2030
Indian food delivery startup Zomato has committed to shifting its entire delivery fleet to electric vehicles by the year 2030. The company has also joined the global electric mobility initiative EV100 of the Climate Group, reflecting on similar electrification efforts by e-commerce giants such as Amazon and Flipkart.
The move will allow Zomato to be recognized as a sustainable company in the ensuing years. It is worth noting here that the company has already been using a small fleet of electric in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru.
The founder and CEO of Zomato, Deepinder Goyal, mentioned that although the complete transition to EVs will not be easy, it is essential in due course. He further emphasized that the rate of adoption is currently low due to some obstacles such as limited battery range, insufficient charging infrastructure, high initial costs, and a dearth of trust in the novel technology.
The CEO further stated that Zomato desires to dynamically assist the transition to EVs by supporting the EV makers, the battery manufacturers, as well as the government. A swifter transition is expected for two-wheelers to EV eventually.
The Climate Group is essentially an international non-profit organization to speed up climate action by mobilizing and convincing businesses along with the government to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
In this context, Goyal claimed that the group intends to be responsible for the environmental impact it creates and subsequently come up with a relevant solution on a global scale.
Besides Zomato, other businesses have also committed to adopting EVs in their respective operations. For instance, Walmart-owned Flipkart had declared to completely shift to electric vehicles by 2030 is a part of Climate Group’s EV100.
The largest online retailer Amazon also pledged to introduce EVs for delivery and to adopt several battery-powered vehicles by joining the EV100 initiative.
