IBM launches new generation Power servers to enhance cloud performance

By Mateen Dalal

IBM Corp. has announced the launch of its IBM Power E1080 server, which is the first server based on the new Power10 processor, developed especially for hybrid clouds. The E1080 server has been designed to provide high-security server platforms and to help clients in maintaining a frictionless hybrid cloud experience throughout their IT infrastructure.

Notably, the product has been launched at a critical junction in the IT industry, as enterprises scramble to stay apace with the unpredictable changes in consumer behavior and demands. Companies are increasingly demanding a platform that can deliver their insights and applications securely at the right time and place.

As per a study conducted by the IBM Institute of Business Value in 2021, 56% of the 3000 CEOs surveyed said that their core focus over the next two to three years would be on enhancing operational flexibility and agility in their organizations.

Experts see the answer to these needs in an all-inclusive hybrid cloud computing model, which combines cloud-based infrastructure and on-premise resources to offer 2.5 times the value provided by a public cloud approach.

Vice President of Product Management for Hybrid Cloud at IBM, Dylan Boday, was quoted saying that the company had to be mindful of the changes that the COVID-19 pandemic was bringing on consumer behavior and the subsequent modifications in their clients’ IT requirements.

Elaborating on key features, the E1080 server includes enhancements for hybrid cloud such as by-the-minute metering of Red Hat software, along with hardware-driven performance enhancements that give 50% more scalability and performance as compared to its predecessor.

Furthermore, the server also comes with new security tools including transparent memory encryption to avoid additional management setup and 4 times the encryption engines per core.

According to sources, IBM has already started accepting orders for the Power E1080 servers and plans to start shipping to customers before the end of this month. The company is also launching Power Expert Care, which provides a tiered approach to the service including Premium and Advanced Expert Care tiers.
