Axiata Group Bhd or Axiata and Digi.Com Bhd are anticipating the potential of their proposed merger company, which is expected to be known as Celcom Digi Bhd, for solidifying the capacity to accelerate digitization for businesses, consumers, and the partner ecosystem and developing local talent.

In a joint statement, both parties stated that the combined entity would be offering better coverage and network quality as it will be primed to invest in network expansion for supporting the budding demand for digitalization and data.

Reportedly, Celcom Digi is expected to be well placed for driving 5G solutions, yield new growth opportunities for large enterprises and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), and collaborate with and attract global digital giants in support of MyDigital and Jendela aspirations.

It will also be leveraging the joined economies of scale for delivering benefits to customers through reinforced core distribution as well as improved efficiencies and network operations realized from operational activities.

To further unlock the digital potential of Malaysia, the parties said that Celcom Digi has proposed investing around USD 56.7 million (RM250 million) in the next five years to build a top-class innovation Centre across Kuala Lumpur to keep the country at the vanguard of the global digital revolution.

The innovation centre is also pivotal for enhancing extensive research and development using 5G, AI (artificial intelligence), and IoT (Internet-of-Things) technology.

Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, Axiata Chairman, expressed that delivering an enhanced customer network and connectivity is imperative.

Shahril referred to the entities as two strongest companies with a track record that contributes to nation-building.

It is also reported that the firm is keen on digital inclusion and growth opportunities that Celcom Digi and the proposed innovation centre will catalyze.

Furthermore, the proposed merger completion is expected to be subjected to approval from the Securities Commission, Axiata and Digi shareholders, Bursa Malaysia Bhd and the adherence to other traditional terms and conditions.
