Amazon emerges as the world’s biggest corporate buyer of renewable energy

By Nikita Chaurasia

Amazon has launched 37 new renewable energy projects across the globe, underpinning its commitment to power 100% of its operations with renewable, clean energy by 2025 – cutting short its original target for 2030 by 5 years.

Essentially, the new projects are fuelling Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio capacity by almost 30% to 15.7 GW up from 12.2 GW, adding to the total number of renewable projects mounting to 310 initiatives spread across 19 countries.

The additional 3.5 GW of clean energy capacity, thanks to the new projects, places Amazon’s leadership to the top, making it the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy. This is expected to advance the company’s efforts in line with The Climate Pledge.

Notably, The Climate Pledge is designed in pursuit of net-zero carbon goals by 2040, which comes 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.

Spread worldwide, the 37 new projects announced are launched across France, Canada, Spain, Australia, the U.S., Japan, India, and the United Arab Emirates. The projects vary in size, type and would comprise of three new wind farms, eight new rooftop solar installations, and 26 new solar farms.

After the newly launched projects, Amazon’s total number of renewable energy projects have reached 310, consisting of 176 rooftop solar projects while the remaining 134 are wind and solar farms.

After the operations begin across Amazon’s 310 new locations, the projects are anticipated to generate 42,000 GWh of renewable energy annually - offering sufficient electricity output to power 3.9 million households each year.

Moreover, the carbon-neutral energy produced by these projects will prevent annual carbon emissions of 17.3 million metric tons, helping curb the equivalent of annual emissions of cars in the U.S. each year which goes beyond 3.7 million.
